I feel compelled to write this post because I feel that organ donation, more specifically pediatric organ donation, needs more awareness. Please consider making yourself and your children donors. A single organ donor could save or enhance the lives of more than 100 people. Someone is added to the waiting list every 10 minutes. An average of 18 patients die everyday because the organ they needed did not become available soon enough.

I can only imagine how hard it would be to make the decision to donate my child’s organs while they are dying. That is why I have already thought about it and came to the conclusion that if anything were to ever happen to my children or myself, we would be organ donors. As you already know, Jaxson has been on the waitlist now for almost 2 years. I know firsthand how stressful it is while you are waiting for “the call.” Having a child who needs a life saving transplant has opened my eyes to see exactly how important and beneficial organ donation is. By making the conscious decision to have myself and my children be organ donors, together we have the opportunity to save or enhance the lives of up to 300 people. Like i’ve said before, to give someone the gift of life is truly amazing.

When you are an organ donor, doctors will do everything to save your life first. You are their first priority. Only when they have exhausted all options and they cannot resuscitate you will your organs be donated. In fact, organ and tissue donation isn’t even discussed until after death is declared. The doctors and nurses involved in a persons care are not a part of the organ and tissue recovery process. Removal of the organs is done respectfully and with dignity; an open casket funeral is still possible.

You can become an organ donor at anytime, and even if it is listed on your ID, you should still let your family know so your wishes are sure to be carried out. If you are not yet a registered donor but would like to be, you can visit this website, and do it from your computer right now. Please talk about it, consider it, and get as many people as you can to become donors. It is the most selfless thing you could ever do, and would be appreciated by so many!
